Gangster Squad
Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless mob king Mickey Cohen runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, guns, and if he has his way, every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It's enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop, except for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders who come together to try and tear Cohen's world apart.

I could appreciate what might be an attempt here from the director and producers to try to do something different for the Gangster genre, but the violence in this entire film is so cartoon styled or comic book like or video game like i cannot respect this film nor give it a pass. The violence in this movie makes me kind of think that this is like that ''Dick Tracy'' movie that was shot in color featuring blood.I wish the violence would have been supervised and shot more gritty and realistic instead of amateurish and uninspired like this film really is unfortunately. It's the director and producers that screwed up what clearly could have been another good Gangster film period. If the writer of this film's script DEMANDED comic book or video game style violence than they are the blame for this crappy Gangster film too.At least it is very violent though,BUT I DIGRESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well done, action laden pic of the Gangster era, and two strong leads in Josh Brolin, and Sean Penn in opposing roles hold their own in this latter 1940's period piece. Absolute pleasure to see.

Twenty minutes in, about the time when an Avenger-esque team was being assembled, I said, "Hey, I like this movie." The characters are interesting, the plot takes unexpected turns and I wanted to see how everything turned out. The movie is very stylized, with a comic book quality to it: "Roger Rabbit" meets "The Untouchables". As a result the characters fulfill stereotypical roles. I do warn that it is extremely violent. Sean Penn's character employs vicious methods of revenge. The ending is a big disappointment - cliche and overly sentimental.

There are some really good things about this movie. Then there are some very lame things. It falls into formula, anything original or interesting disappears. I yelled several times at the tv, "Oh come on, give me a break." It's that kind of movie.

This wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen, it is far from being good. Very predictable but still entertaining.

This was a killer neo-noir, reminiscent of "Dick Tracy", or "The Untouchables", as another suggested, with spot-on casting. Brolin and Penn were perfect arch-enemies; both ideally suited in their respective good vs. evil roles (Penn makes quite a convincing sociopathic thug). Frog-throated, craggy Nick Nolte as the police chief with a hidden agenda; a sultry Emma Stone as the tasty tomato; submachine guns, right crosses, and left hooks galore. Loved it. My kinda movie. FIVE STARS.

This sort of a comic book version of underground cops against Mickey Cohen, a mobster trying to take over Los Angeles. All the main actors (Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling) bring new voices to the movie sorta like Daniel Day Lewis in “Lincoln” or “There will be Blood.” It was crazy and enjoyable, but not that serious or deep. I’m not sure the director meant to make such a campy movie.

I did enjoy this stylish period 40's L.A. gangster flick. Impressive cast, but acting really isn't the draw here (no one really puts in a fantastic performance) it is the action and the costumes/sets (this is a very good looking movie). Definitely hits the film noir buttons, but not as effectively as the Black Dahlia. For a mobster vs lawmen (sort of like the Untouchables) flick it is a good one.

"Scarface" clashed with "Magnum Force", a team of hard boiled L.A. police squad formed solely to stop mob king Cohen from taking over the city of Angels.
