Add a CommentMy God, poor Léon is rolling in his grave right now! What have they done with his book???? This movie is atrocious, ridiculous, the theater setting looked more like circus—and cheap, gaudy-colored circus! Instead of this travesty, watch the old version with the glorious Greta Garbo.
Gravely disappointed. The director usually does fine work, but ANNA KARENINA seemed a bit muddled. Its story got lost in a gimmick and then the properly paced plotline to gather tension and build in the fundamental response was rushed out of being. I had hopes for so much, but they were completely dashed. I dare not recommend this film to anyone, unless you just want to analyze set design and costumes for two hours (hey, more power to you, if you do).
I've really enjoyed two of Joe Wright's prior films with Keira Knightley, (Pride & Prejudice and Atonement), but this one didn't quite gel for me. The aesthetics were gorgeous, with sets that jumped off the screen like an oil painting. But the saga wasn't developed well. I wasn't empathetic with anyone, especially Anna (Knightley). Jude Law's Alexei Karenin needed more fire in his belly... Your wife's cheating! Get mad, dammit!! And the theatrical thing didn't work for me either. Not bad... but not great. Disjointed.
Found this movei too hard to watch - Quit before 1/2 hour into it.
WOW. Such rich colors and exquisite detailed sets. Great directing and camera work. Scene with Knighley's neck while dressing just made me melt. Good banter besides.
Agree with most of the other comments. Poor character development and the stylized sets were an impediment to the story - I mean come on, show us an actual horse race, not a horse running across a stage. Also, at various times they jumped over too much in the story line for the friends I was watching with that had not read the book to follow. Will say that Jude Law was spot on as Karenin though. Several other performances were also good, mostly by minor characters.
Disappointed that it was theatrical. Did not finish watching as I found it very boring.
Boring!
an excellent adaptation of Tolstoy classic. The production design did a creative transformation with its imaginative sets and lush costumes. The only drawback is that Keira Knightley can't change her persona in all the movies she tackles - she is perennially playing herself and that's not a mark of a good actress.
Not as exciting as we had hoped.
