I have rated this "ok", but it's not okay if you don't like graphic shots of people getting their bodies slit open and blood pouring out. Other than that, it's a very strange period drama that seems to feature the cast of "Downton Abbey" meeting the cast of "Murdoch Mysteries". Edgar Allen Poe is not rolling over in his grave because he does not recognize anything in this movie. I knew it had horrid reviews, and i was not bored, but I was disappointed.

it's a fun movie for the season, but it's not really scary and it's not really a mystery ... the best part was the ballroom scene with all the beautiful costumes. The true mystery was the reason why John Cusack had to whisper through most of the movie. It made no sense to have the foreword to the movie, if Poe was involved in a very public murder investigation just before he died.

I enjoyed watching this contrary to the bad reviews listed below. Yeah it could have a few tweaks here and there. Otherwise it was a entertaining movie.

Agree with rotten tomatoes: "Thinly scripted, unevenly acted, and overall preposterous, The Raven disgraces the legacy of Edgar Allen Poe with a rote murder mystery that's more silly than scary." Uninspiring story of an unlikely serial killer who acted out crimes by following the scripts from his favorite author, as similar films on killers copying religious prophecies or detective cases.

I was really looking forward to this one, as I've always like John Cusack's work, and I'm also very fond of anything 19th century, dark, and gothic. Poe encapsulates that perfectly. I truly wish I could rate this higher, but the script was just plain weak. The crossing-genre mashup thing isn't an issue to me; I loved the Robert Downey Jr./Sherlock films, and I'm waiting on Abe Lincoln/Dracula Killer (lol). Cusack does a lot of irritating bellowing as Poe, and his buddy/buddy arrangement with the detective felt phony. The antagonist's identity was somewhat anticlimactic, too. A real shame. I'm glad I saw it, but it had potential for more. I think 3½ stars is being generous -- a pity endorsement.

I recall liking Cusack's acting but the story couldn't hold my attention. My dad finished watching it while I sat with him working on something else. It was towards the end of the film I started to pay attention and suddenly thought "Wouldn't it be funny if that was the killer?" Within the next two minutes, that question was answered. And yes, it was funny because I didn't waste my time 1-2 hours "who could it be" because the answer was so glaringly obvious at the end. You'd figure that with all the crap that went on that they would've come up with something more original. Nope, let's just make a cliche out of it.

The final days of Edgar Allan Poe remain a mystery. The storyline in The Raven tries to fill in the blanks of those final days with a fictional murder mystery. The killer recreates the murders in Poe stories and leaves clues about the next murder. It is up to Poe and a Baltimore police detective to catch the elusive killer.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. Not too bad---good performance. I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.
